What is AVID?
AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all
students for college readiness and success in a global society

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a global nonprofit organization that operates with one guiding principle: Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge. AVID’s kindergarten through higher education system brings research-based curriculum and strategies to students each day that develop critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas.
AVID is a structured college preparatory system that offers direct support for first-generation college-goers. It is a school wide approach to curriculum and rigor to prepare the AVID Student for his or her next academic step in life.
Each AVID student is expected to maintain a commitment to rigor, utilize organizational tools such as the Cornell Note and binder systems, as well as participation in collaborative study groups, writing groups, and Socratic seminars.

What AVID is not...
AVID is not an "at-risk" nor a remedial program. It is a program designed to help / support students who are planning to attend and graduate from a four year university, usually becoming the first in their family's history to do so. AVID is not for students who do not do their homework. AVID is not for unmotivated students. AVID is meant for students who are determined and willing to do the extra work needed to be successful in preparation to succeed in a four year university.
tutoring in avid
Every Tuesday and Thursday AVID 9 goes through the tutorial process, with students helping each other (under the guidance of a tutor) gain deeper understanding of topics that are points of confusion for them. This mimics the college study group experience, and furthers student learning by having them take ownership, rather than just receiving help.
